• Chapter Nine • Entering Mama Bear Mode

After I finished filming 1st Look, I returned to Orange County. I loved all of the travel experiences—meeting new people, seeing new places—but after spending so much time away from home, I was really looking forward to some time off to relax and catch up with my family. I was single again, and after a few great weeks in New York, I was feeling solid and confident, ready to be back home and starting fresh.

Pretty soon after I got back, guess who was calling me? You got it: Corey. Just when I was feeling good, he was back. He called me to come pick up a bunch of stuff I had left at his house. When I got there, it was clear he was also hoping to talk. We were sitting in his kitchen catching up a little when I got a phone call from Casey that my aunt Darla had died. She was only in her late forties, and in good health—she had a blood clot in her lungs and died quite suddenly. I was shocked and just broke down, sobbing so hard that I couldn’t breathe. I hung up and knew I needed to get to my family at the hospital, but I couldn’t even form a sentence, much less drive. Corey immediately took over and guided me into his car to get me to the hospital. He knew my family well, and he was supportive and comforting to all of us as we gathered at the hospital to say good-bye.

I was in a very bad place for the next couple of weeks, and Corey was there for me every single step of the way. He literally would not leave my side: he made me breakfast, brought me water, checked on me, and always asked how I was feeling. My whole family was really torn up after her death, and Corey was a shoulder for me to lean on. He knew Aunt Darla, and he mourned her passing as well. My family still harbored resentments against Corey from all of the issues we’d had in the past, but this was a vulnerable time. The experience really brought us together. Seeing him with my mom and sisters crying outside of the hospital changed the way that I saw him fitting into my life.

We got back together without really discussing it. Here we go again, back on the roller coaster. We were just… together, all of the time, and it felt natural and good. Corey was always there for me when I really needed him, and now I needed him more than ever.

Although tragedy had reunited us, the next few months were some of the best times we’d ever had. Corey was on his best behavior, taking great care of me and making a real effort to connect with my family too. He wasn’t traveling, and I was just filming some last pickup scenes for 1st Look in LA and thinking about my next move.
