CHAPTER 18

Ally stepped into the kitchen and let the door swing closed behind her.

“Was that Gabby out there?” Charlotte turned to face her. “I thought I heard her voice, but I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Yes, it was, and now she wants to go to Sarah’s house to walk through the crime scene.” Ally fired off a text to Luke, then looked back up at her grandmother. “Mee-Maw, I can’t let her go alone.”

“No, of course you can’t.” Charlotte waved her hand through the air. “Don’t worry, I have this under control. Just let me know what happens.”

“I will. Luke just replied that he’ll meet us there. The crime scene has been processed. He’s going to release it soon. But I’m worried that things might get out of hand with him there. Do you think I did the right thing telling him? Maybe I didn’t have to because it’s about to be released?”

“Yes, of course you did. He has to give permission for you to have a look around. Gabby has to watch her every step right now. She can’t risk getting caught doing something like that.” Charlotte looked into her eyes. “Remember, Luke is a seasoned detective. He’ll know how to keep things under control.”

“I’m sure he will.” Ally hurried back out through the shop and onto the sidewalk in front of it. “Gabby!” She cringed at the sight of the young woman halfway down the street already. “Wait for me!”

Gabby glanced back at her but didn’t slow down.

“Ugh!” Ally jogged toward her. “Gabby, please, stop!”

Gabby stopped and turned around.

“Ally, I don’t have time to waste. I told you that.”

“I’m here now.” Ally tried to catch her breath as she stopped beside her. “Let’s go together. Okay?”

“Okay.” Gabby started toward Sarah’s house again. “I’m sorry, I just have to keep moving. I don’t want to stop and think about things for too long.”

“It’s all right. I understand.” Ally matched her pace to Gabby’s. “But we could have taken my car.”

“I’m trying to enjoy as much fresh air as I can, while I can.” Gabby glanced at Ally but didn’t slow down.

“Are you sure that’s what it is? Or is it that you were trying to get away from me?”

“No, I’m not thinking clearly. I’m sorry. I’m just a bundle of nerves right now.”

“I understand. Just know that I have your back.” Ally watched as Luke’s car rolled up to Sarah’s house.

“Let’s do this.” Gabby took a deep breath as she marched toward Sarah’s house.

Ally matched her pace.

Luke waited for them near the front door.

Gabby hesitated as she reached him.

“Gabby.” Luke paused beside the door with one hand on the handle. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“No, I don’t want to do it. I have to do it.” Gabby looked toward the door. “Keep it closed, but not quite all the way, that’s how it was when I got here.”

Gabby closed her eyes and took a deep breath. When she opened them again her expression hardened.

“I walked up to the door and knocked.
