Claire parked in the driveway of the home she grew up in and followed the stone pathway that trailed up to the front door through a row of lattice archways covered in roses. She stopped to admire the flowers her father had spent so much time growing for her mother when he was still alive and swallowed the lump in her throat.

Just what happened to you, dad? Claire reached up and touched one of the roses with a gentle hand.

“Claire? Did you just get here, too?”

Claire turned around. Her brother, Ellis, stepped off the driveway and took the stone steps one at a time. Her gaze drifted to the bag he carried in his arms.

“Yeah, I did.” She smiled at him.

“Great timing. I don’t know if mom told you, but I brought crème brûlée pie.” Ellis held up the bag and grinned.

“I brought the wine.” She showed him the bottle.

“Ohh, Chardonnay. Nice choice.” Ellis walked with her to the front door.

Inside, the aroma of garlic bread and clam chowder greeted their noses. They followed the enticing smell into the kitchen, where they dropped off their items and hugged their mother. Marilyn Noble kissed them both on the cheek and gave them each a squeeze.

“I’m so happy to see you two. Your timing is impeccable. I just finished cooking the garlic bread.” She untied her apron.

“It smells great in here,” Ellis breathed in through his nose and sighed.

“Takes me back to when we were kids,” Claire agreed.

When they were young, their mother had always enjoyed cooking and delighted in making all kinds of meals for them to try throughout the week. Soups with bread and salad had been a staple for lunch on weekends.

“The table’s set and the salad is dressed. All that’s left is the soup and the bread.” Marilyn hung her apron on a hook at the end of the kitchen. “Ellis, dear, could you carry that Dutch oven over to the table? Be careful. It’s hot.”

“Sure thing, mom.” Ellis carried out her instructions while Claire prepared their drinks and their mother plated the garlic bread on a serving tray.

After distributing the wine glasses around the table, Claire sat down across from Ellis and licked her lips.

“This looks delicious, mom,” Claire said.

“I hope it tastes as good as it looks.” Marilyn laughed.

“You know your food always hits the spot,” Ellis said.

They took turns ladling the clam chowder into their soup bowls. Then their mother passed around the salad bowl.

Claire used the tongs to place some of the salad—a mixture of lettuce, onions, tomato and cucumber—on her dinner plate. She added a piece of garlic bread after she handed the bowl over to Ellis.

“Let’s dig in, shall we?” Their mother smiled.

Claire dipped her spoon into her soup and tried a bite of the rich, milky mixture. The thick and creamy soup danced on her palate. She went for another bite, this time scooping out a spoonful of clams, potato, and bacon.

She smiled at the taste. “Mmm. This is great, mom.”

“Thank you, sweetie.
