Chapter Ten

* * *

Spencer Bengal came home to find Janssen, who was staying with him until he got settled, sitting on his front porch, with Spike curled up in his lap. He raised a hand in greeting, headed for the door. He wanted a shower, some food and a healthy dose of solitude, which wasn’t usually an issue. Janssen tended to keep to himself, so much so that Spencer often forgot that he even had a house guest.

“Hey, man,” Janssen called out, just as Spencer opened the door.

He turned in surprise. Janssen rarely ever initiated conversations, unless it was a matter of life or death. “Yeah?”

“Anything I need to know about?”

“No. What do you mean?” Spencer frowned.

“Last time I saw you this preoccupied, we were about to do some serious stuff in a foreign country. Has Command contacted you or something?”

“No,” Spencer turned back toward the door.

“Why you running off?” the battle-scarred man’s eyes narrowed with suspicion.

Dropping his head back and closing his eyes, Spencer sighed, knowing that, while his buddy might be antisocial, he was also very perceptive.

“I’m not running off. I had a long day and I want a shower and some food. Have you eaten yet?” he changed the subject.

“No. I had a big lunch over at the house,” he jerked his head toward the Beckett estate.

Spencer’s modest home sat at the back of the property, where he could keep an eye on nearly the entire perimeter.

Spencer nodded. “I bet. Matisse is a pretty good cook,” he commented, a vein at his temple pulsing lightly.

Janssen’s brows rose as realization dawned.

“Oh, is that what’s eating at you? You got a crush on Mattie?”

“No, I do not,” Spencer’s blush belied his words.

“Wait,” Janssen’s tone turned dark. “You don’t think that I’ve got a thing going on with her, do you?” he demanded.

Spencer merely stared at him.

“You know me better than that, man,” Janssen shook his head in disgust. “I’m a married man, for crying out loud. How could you even…?”

“I only know what I see,” Spencer replied in a low voice.

“Or what you think you see,” Janssen made a face. “Are you so blinded by how you feel about this girl that you can’t see your own friends for who they really are? That’s a crying shame. It’s stuff like that that’ll get you in trouble, my friend,” he glared.

Spencer let out a breath that he hadn’t realized he’d been holding.

“I don’t even know which end is up right now,” he confessed.

“Then maybe you should step back and think about stuff, before you go projecting your own fears on other people,” Janssen ground out.

“Yeah, you’re right. I don’t know what I was thinking. Sorry, man,” Spencer ran a hand through his hair in frustration.

“Well, I’m thinking that if something is screwing you up so badly that you start accusing people, who’ve fought by your side and saved your hide, more than once, of betraying you and the most important people in their own lives, you might want to step away from that,” Janssen growled.
