Ally was relieved to be home, and excited to be greeted at the door by Arnold and Peaches. She set her keys down on the counter and headed into the kitchen to prepare dinner for a pig, and a cat. As she began getting their dishes together, she thought about the call from her grandmother. She had managed to track Louisaâs movements during her last shift that she didnât even get to finish, but it hadnât revealed much. The way everyone continued to emphasize how much Louisa loved her son, created conflict in Ally. Yes, it was possible that he had his mother fooled, but it was also possible that an innocent, grieving man was locked away for a crime he didnât commit.
Ally grabbed her phone and made a call to Mrs. Bing.
âAlly, any news?â She asked quickly.
âUnfortunately, not much just yet. I was wondering though, do you know anything about Nancy, the owner of the jewelry store?â Ally poured food into Peachesâ bowl.
âOnly that she lives in Mainbry, and that her store was robbed a short time ago.â
âWhat about her son Cody? Do you know anything about him?â Ally added food to Arnoldâs bowl, as he squealed enthusiastically.
âAgain, not much. He was living with his dad in another state but moved to Mainbry to live with his mom a couple of months ago. He spends quite a bit of time at the jewelry store with his mom. I have heard a few of the other parents mention that heâs been in a bit of trouble at school. But I guess itâs hard for him to adjust to a move in the middle of the school year.â
âYes, youâre probably right about that.â Ally frowned. âThanks Mrs. Bing. You have a good night.â
âYou too, Ally. Let me know if thereâs anything I can do to help with the investigation. And make sure you keep me in the loop.â
âI will.â Ally ended the call. As she gave Arnold and Peaches their food, her stomach rumbled. Sheâd been so caught up in the murder and the shop that sheâd barely had anything to eat herself. She was about to pull a frozen meal out of the freezer when she heard a light knock on the door.
âAlly?â Luke poked his head inside.
âLuke!â Ally smiled as she walked over to him. âIs this an official visit?â
âOfficially, I am having a break before I go back to the station.â Luke stepped into the cottage and held up a paper bag. âI owe you dinner.â
âIâm not sure if thatâs true, I think itâs me that owes you.â Ally grinned as she took the bag and carried it into the kitchen.
âEither way, Iâm here for some quality Ally time.â
Ally hugged Luke and gave him a quick kiss on the lips. The tenderness in his eyes made her heart skip a beat.
Arnold left his food and ran over to greet Luke.
âAnd pig time. Hi buddy.â Luke had originally taken some time to get used to the pot-bellied pig, but they had become good friends.
