Chisolm spent the better part of an hour telling him part of the story. He talked about the direct action against Colonel Tran Ng, then about heading back afterward with regular army infantry. He left out any reference to Mai.

Davis asked for dates, and Chisolm did the best he could to remember them. Davis asked him for command officers, unit insignias, and any other hints that would point toward which infantry unit accompanied Chisolm’s squad that day.

He didn’t ask what happened that made Chisolm want to find Pittz. Chisolm was grateful for that.

“There’s something else,” Chisolm said. “I’ve been thinking about it since I got here.”

“What’s that?”

“His first name. Pittz’s, I mean.”

Davis raised an eyebrow. “That would definitely help.”

Chisolm envisioned the rangy Fremont and the bulking farm boy standing in the doorway to the hooch. “I think one of his friends called him Lenny.”

“That’ll narrow it down some. He might be Len, or Leo, or Leonard, or just plain L., but that does narrow the field.”

“Good,” Chisolm said.

“Let me do some research over the next few days,” Davis finally said. “I’ll give you a call when I have something or if I reach a dead end.”

“Mr. Edwards said he wouldn’t give me this guy’s information,” Chisolm said. “He said they’d send him a letter for me, though.”

“Do you think that will work?”

Chisolm shook his head. “I’m pretty sure it won’t.”

“I won’t share anything with you that isn’t open source,” Davis said. “The VA has pretty strict rules about the use of our database.”

“But if it’s something you find in the clear?”

“I’ll share it.” He hesitated a moment, then added, “I’d just ask you to consider this. For some people, finding peace is accomplished in exactly the way you are attempting here. Facing the past. Resolving it. For most people, in fact, that’s the best route. But for some, those who are able to, forgetting works.” He looked at Chisolm. “If this man has forgotten, don’t disturb his peace to find your own.”
