These modes tend to be sequential, although some companies follow different paths and some skip modes.2 In addition, some companies may use more than one mode at the same time. Also, the R&D/innovation organization tends to grow larger as companies progress through the stages. Finally, in companies with multiple business units, different business units may be at different stages in the evolutionary path. Each organizational stage also places emphasis on one of the three different types of R&D, as described in the previous chapter, although this is fluid, as many of the companies are in transition. As is illustrated in table 5.1, the local server mode emphasizes cost-driven R&D. The autonomous player mode emphasizes market-driven R&D, as does the global network member mode, which also includes steps toward serious efforts in knowledge-driven R&D. The global mandate holder very much emphasizes knowledge-driven R&D.
