CHAPTER EIGHT

“Miss Hockette, I think by now you’d know that we don’t make those sort of promises.”

Elly spun away from the table to find Sheriff Alburn’s steely gray eyes staring her down. “Right. Sorry.” She snuck a quick look at Kelly, who was already slinking away toward a group of girls her age.

“Look, Eliza, I appreciate that you and Claire and Nathan kept the peace and maintained a mostly intact crime scene. I do. However, I do not want to be spending my time warning you off getting involved further. My deputy and I will handle things from here.” He waited until Elly’s eyes returned to meet his. “Are we clear?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good. Now why don’t you go and call your grandmother; she’s rang my cell about fifty times since this all started. If she wasn’t such a staple of this town, I’d block her number right about now.”

Elly nodded, feeling guilty about having her phone on airplane mode for the past hour to save on the battery. I should have thought about how worried Grams would be, she thought to herself as she headed up to the front desk to make the call with some privacy.

Her grandmother picked up on the first ring, not even waiting for a “hello” before explaining to Elly how worried she was.

“Yes, Grams, I’m okay,” Elly snuck in when her grandmother paused for a breath. “I know, I’m sorry. I love you, too. I know, I should have thought about how worried you’d be,” Elly said as she gathered up the reading log forms to bring back to the group. “Jan is fine. Oh, good, I’m glad she sent you updates every five minutes.” Elly tried not to chuckle. Of course the canasta group has all the details already. “Yes, Grams, I’ll text you as soon as I get home. Even if it’s 2am. Okay, I love you, too. See you for breakfast. Yes, I promise I’ll remind the volunteers.”

Elly had long considered her own mother to be the worrier of the family, but this call reflected how serious her grandmother must have been about her bad gut feeling. And with good reason, she reminded herself, making sure she kept her phone ringer on just in case.

Reading forms in one hand, extra pens in the other, Elly stopped back over to where Buck, Claire, and Nathan were still stationed with the body, making sure nobody approached. “Hey, Grams called and wanted me to let you all know she plans to still serve breakfast tomorrow at nine as a thank you to the volunteers.”

Claire and Nathan both perked up. “Is she making her famous fruit compote syrup with waffles?” Claire had spent many a Saturday morning at Elly’s grandparents’ house scarfing down that very breakfast in their early childhood.

“I would expect no less,” Elly replied, having helped her grandmother shop for the ingredients for the large spread she was planning earlier in the week.

“I’m in! Buck too, if the sheriff will give him an hour off for it.
