EIGHT

She returned to the yellow house after that, and lost herself in her work for a while. With her music turned up loud and her arms aching from the repetitive motions of smoothing drywall mud over the seams, it was almost meditative.

Grady couldn’t help her every day; he still had to help his brother with his scrap hauling business every so often, and today was one of those days. She finished as the afternoon began to turn into evening, and was satisfied with her work, even if she was unsatisfied with the mysteries that kept spinning through her head. She knew the police were working on the case, and she should just let it go, but she couldn’t.

She drove home in silence, looking forward to a shower. After that, she thought she would take a little time to get some more work done on the catio. It wasn’t as if Amaretto knew what she was building and was waiting impatiently for it to get done, but she knew the cat would love the ability to experience the great outdoors whenever she wanted to and wanted to finish it sooner rather than later.

Her plans were derailed as soon as she turned onto her road and saw Beth walking with her basset hound, Sammy. Her elderly neighbor raised her hand in greeting, and Flora pulled the truck up beside them, rolling the window down.

Flora wasn’t sure if she wanted to, but she wasn’t sure she didn’t want to either. Beth could be blunt and sometimes a little too opinionated, but Flora often found that she felt better for talking to her. If nothing else, Beth might have some insight into the small-town politics Flora wasn’t aware of.

“I would like that,” she replied. “I think I’m going to stop off at home and freshen up first, though. I’ve been working all day.”

“Perfect, that will give me time to finish my walk with Sammy and get the tea started. I’ll see you in a little bit.”

With a wave goodbye, Beth and her dog started walking away, their pace slow but each well-matched with the other. Flora rolled her window back up and continued home, where she greeted her cat, then left Amaretto with some treats in her bowl while she went to take a shower.

After she was done showering, she put on a light-weight summer dress, glad
