. . . . .

“He’s filed a complaint,” the Captain asserts.

“I knew he probably would.”

We’re sitting in his far more spacious office with an equally appealing view of Lake Michigan with its frosted surface.

“Christ, and I’m trying to get my goddam Christmas shopping finished, Parisi. Why do you task me so?”

“My apologies, Captain.”

“Lies don’t sit well on you, Parisi.”

“No. I guess not.”

“You’d better lay off the little prick.”

“He’s the way to landing both of them.”

“How?”

I tell him what I see in Patrick Tracy, his down-spiral looks.

“You can’t harass him anyway. You know how it works.”

“He’s ready to pop, like a crowning boil.”

“That’s what I needed to hear. Thank you very much. Jesus Christ.”

“I can get his brother if I get Patrick first.”

“You can get yourself de-horned, my man. Look, Michael, this is not some field of fire.”

“I’m well aware, Captain.”

“The rules of engagement differ diametrically.”

“Yes.”

“You can’t keep getting in his face unless you’re ready to read him his rights and charge him. Can I become any more basic than that, Detective?”

“No, you probably cannot.”

“I had trouble losing my military life, Michael. They change the rules on you. When someone pissed you off, you had the double-oh-seven attitude, license to kill.”

“I don’t want to kill them, Captain. That would involve far too little suffering on their parts. I want them locked in a cell until they’ve seen the sun for the last time from some window in their cell blocks.”

He looks at me with amusement or bemusement; I can’t tell which.

“Your father was old-school, but he wasn’t an executioner, so I’m glad you’re not into ‘vengeance is mine’.”

“I’m a Catholic, sort of. I’m pretty much New Testament, but I’m only forgiving to an extent.”

“Don’t get carried away. Cases go cold all the time, even when you goddam know who did the crime. You’re a little early into this tour to burn your candle from both ends, Michael.”

I don’t answer.

“Back off on him, trooper. Got it?”
