There are several ways that backyard chickens have been fed over the years. As I previously mentioned, there was a time when families would save kitchen scraps for their flock and let them free range. While your chickens will survive on this type of feeding, it is not appropriate if you are attempting to help your feathered friends live a long and healthy life. The chicken feed industry has learned a lot over the years and we now have the ability to get them all of the nutrients they need without guessing. But, how do you give them that feed?

1 Free choice. This is my preferred style of feeding. I leave layer feed out all day for my chickens. I keep it out of the elements but they have access to it whenever they want. They are also able to forage for insects as they please. The downside of this style of feeding is that leaving it out will attract mice and rats to your chickens’ living space. To solve this, find a mouse-proof feeder or take it away at dark. Note also that there is no concern for overeating with chickens.

TIP: Keep your feed and water in the run (preferably covered) instead of the coop. This prevents some amount of moisture and the attraction of pests into their sleeping quarters. They don’t need food or water at night anyway.
