3. Skewers: these are the opposite of a pin. You put a valuable piece between a less valuable piece and your piece, so that you force your opponent to move the more valuable piece and you gobble up the less valuable piece. For example, you move your Rook to h8 attacking his King on e8. His Rook is on a8. When he moves his King, as he must, you eat his Rook.

4. Discovered Attack: you attack a piece with one of your pieces and when you do so it reveals another, more significant attack by a different one of your pieces. An example of this is you move a pawn to attack one of his Knights. When you do this now it opens up a clear line from your Bishop to his Queen. He has to save his Queen so you win the Knight.
