DEFENDING AGAINST DEFENCE REMOVAL
Again the medicine must be mainly preventative. It is easy to see that in most of the breakthrough combinations the attack would have failed if there had been more pieces defending the king, e.g. in Diagram 177 if one moves the black rook on b8 to b7 then his extra defender of g7 makes all the difference.
At other times it is possible to assess that the defence removal is not dangerous. Consider the following position:
P.Littlewood-J.Littlewood
British Championship 1979
Black has deliberately played for this position because he has seen that: (a) 1 d3 xd3 2 xd3 f6 is winning for Black and that (b) 1 xh7+ (as played in the game) 1…xh7 2 h5+ g8 3 xg7 xg7 4 g4+ h6 only leads to a draw by perpetual check as an attempt to win by 5 xc8 xc8 6 f3 fails to 6…c1+ 7 f2 f1+ and Black wins.
However, allowing breakthrough combinations is often playing with fire —I will never forget the famous Karpov-Miles game from the European Championships at Skara in 1980:
