Moving pawns in front of a castled king – Don’t expose your king and give your opponent targets to aim for. You can’t move pawns backward to cover up later on.

Not developing pieces – Your bishops and knights are your main fighters at the start of the game; get them developed quickly and efficiently. Piece activity is extremely important in the opening.

Bringing out the queen too early – She is worth nine pawns and opposing knights, bishops, and pawns would love to trade for her. If she comes out early, you may lose her if you are not careful or will lose time as your opponent chases her around.
