1.e4 d5

The Black d5 pawn challenges the pawn on e4 to a duel. White decides if both pawns remain on the board or not.

White usually captures by 2.exd5. If 2.Nc3, Black chooses between 2…d4 or 2…dxe4. Sometimes I play 2.d4 dxe4 heading toward the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit. In this game White advances to 2.e5 in the style of the French Defence.

2.e5 c5

Black’s pawns attack e4 and d4. My strategy is to develop the light-squared bishop to f5 before I push a pawn to e6.

3.h3 Nc6

4.Nf3 Bf5
