“Strategy” in chess corresponds to any short- or long-term plan a player comes up with to achieve a specific goal. This goal can be the capture of a piece or the establishment of an advantageous position. Chess strategies usually comprise combinations of moves calculated by a player and resulting in a desired position.

The following is a list of important strategic concepts to keep in mind and apply during the endgame.

The idea of “space” in chess refers to the number of squares that are controlled by a player. The more total squares a player controls, the more space he has on the board. Space can be gained in numerous ways, but it is mostly done by properly placing pawns and developing pieces.
