Pawns are the only pieces that can be promoted. Notice in the previous diagram that White has two queens after promoting. This is both legal and encouraged. What if your chess set didn't come with a second queen? A common practice is to use an upside-down rook as a second queen. If your rooks are still on the board, you can use a coin, thimble, or any other piece-sized object. Be creative! You've earned it.

Promotion is important at the end of games when there are few pieces to stop the pawns from advancing. We say that two players are in a pawn race if they are both advancing pawns that cannot be stopped by other pieces. Usually, the first person to promote goes on to win the game. The last scene of the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer features a famous pawn race that we will analyze in the next section.
