The Value of the Pieces

By now you should have some feel for the fact that some pieces are better than others. We already noticed that a queen has the powers of both a rook and a bishop. Also, we saw that each bishop can only ever go to half the squares on the board, whereas a rook can go to them all, so maybe a rook is worth twice as much as bishop?

So, based on those examples above, and the experience of centuries of chess players, it is agreed that the pieces are worth this number of pawns (roughly):

Queen is worth 9 pawns

Rook is worth 5 pawns

Bishop is worth 3 pawns

Knight is worth 3 pawns
