CHAPTER FIVE

Types Of Positions: Closed Positions

A closed position is characterized as a position with a locked center of the pawn and very few pawns have historically been traded (if any). This type of position is somewhat different from the other two styles of positions (semi-open and open) and it is important for you to learn how to play in this situation effectively. We would speak about three variables present in each of the categories of positions and go through each of them in depth. The three factors we will discuss are the position schedules, the pace at which you need to act, and the most effective pieces.

• Plans:

Many available plans can be executed in closed positions. A number of pawn breaks and maneuvers include closed position plans. In order to open files and allow your pieces more freedom to pass, one choice is to drive pawns and trade them. You should try to swap in the bad pieces for the good pieces of your opponent as well.

We see in the position to the right that Black is blocked behind his c5, d6 and e5 pawns by a bad bishop on e7. He should play 1...Bg5! in order to trade off this poor bishop! This causes Black's poor bishop to trade him for White's good bishop. For Black, this is a very positive thing, so he would already have a good bishop and White would still be faced with a bad bishop.
