5.2 Inverse Least Squares (ILS)

ILS, also known as multiple linear regression (MLR) , is the simplest method for inverse calibration [1, 2]. It expresses Y as a function of X by means of a calibration matrix (or vector) B:

being E the error matrix. Figure 5.2 illustrates the details of such ILS scheme.

It is important to notice that B has not a clear physical meaning or, at least, not as clear as the pure signals in S obtained by CLS. In ILS, the calibration step (i.e. the calculation of B) implies the following equation:
