Chapter 11
Jacob
Jacob and Charles reached the open door and peered inside cautiously. As Jacobâs flashlight beam danced around the room, the pair noticed the tell-tale signs of what looked to be a company break room. Jacob instinctively flipped the light switch a couple times before realizing his error.
A round wooden table acted as the centerpiece for what was otherwise a huge, disastrous mess. Gray metal chairs were pushed up against one wall, and it looked like the snack and drink machines had been recently ransacked. The floor was littered with aluminum cans, and there was a canvas tool bag sitting open in the corner.
âWell, we werenât the first ones here,â Charles remarked.
They searched through the snack machine shelves for any scraps of food left behind, but everything was gone, even the condiments from the fridge. Black soot on the ceiling and a pile of warm ashes on the floor made them believe that someone had been burning something in that room.
âIt looks like we found the source of the fire smell,â Charles said. âWhat do you think happened here? It sure doesnât look good.â
âI dunno.â Jacob didnât want to say it, but they both knew it was true. âLooks like some kind of big fight went down. I donât see any blood though, do you?â
Charles looked around the floor more carefully. âNope. Here, shine your light over here.â He touched the wall and examined his finger. âAhh, itâs just ketchup. It just looks like maybe the tourists are getting desperate for food. I imagine theyâre not doing so well.â
Jacob hated to think that Anna had encountered some sort of trouble down there with all of those people, especially Keith. He tried to get the thought of any problems out of his head, but he couldnât help wondering what his wife was facing right now. He wasnât even one hundred percent sure if Anna was down in the caves in the first place. They could have already found a way out by now, or, God forbid, been injured. There were so many variables, and he just wanted to know if he was on the right path.
The men took the opportunity to pick up the furniture and take a seat in a real chair for the first time all day. Jacob handed Charles a bottled water from his pack, and switched off his flashlight to conserve power. He didnât expect the darkness to be so overwhelming, so disorienting.
âWow, this is intense,â he commented into the void. âDo you think theyâre trying to get around in this kind of darkness? I didnât even think of that.â
âWell, hopefully they still have lights,â Charles reassured him. âMaybe on their cellphones, or maybe a lighter. But I agree, this darkness is the real deal.â
Jacob imagined Anna crawling around on the hard, wet floor in full panic mode. He knew that she was a brave woman, and she wasnât specifically afraid of the dark, but he couldnât imagine trying to maneuver through these caves with no light.
