Chapter 20 – Best Laid Plans

Outside, Anise did a little jig and hugged Minami. “Aaah, this is gonna be great! I can’t wait to work with you!”

This made Minami blush, but she accepted the embrace without complaint. She was more than well enough acquainted with Anise to know what she was like now. “Aa! It should be a blast.”

“Right?” Anise said, stepping away and grinning. “Jeez, the very idea that I might’ve missed the audition if Headmistress Lawson hadn’t told me about it. I’d have been kicking myself.”

“Check the job board every day,” Minami said, walking for the exit gate back into the street. “I missed a few auditions because I didn’t do that when I first arrived. I was too busy chasing bad targets like Luna, hah.”

“Heard about Isla?” Anise said, turning into the street and heading back for campus. She picked up the pace; she still had to shower, change, and get back into the city to catch a skybus over to Midway.

“No, what’s she up to?”

“You just answered your own question,” Anise laughed.

“Chasing Luna?” Minami said, eyes wide. “That was a bad idea for me, and I was already a good bit ahead of where Isla is now.”

“She knows it won’t be easy,” Anise said. She jogged on the spot, eager to get moving again.

Minami cocked her head. “Not easy? She doesn’t know the half of it.”

Getting underway again, Anise shrugged. “I’ll be supporting her right to the end. She needs to work out for herself if it’s something she’s capable of.”

“Aa, she does, at that,” Minami nodded. They were fairly silent for much of the return trip, jogging for some of it at Anise’s instigation, until they finally arrived back at the dormitory.

“Looking forward to working with you, partner.” Anise held a hand out.

Grasping, Minami shook and gave her a genuine smile. “Likewise. Let’s make it the best show it can be!”
