Tears sting my eyes. The shock of the moment had kept them at bay, but once I’m alone there’s nothing to stop the pain from pouring out.

I sense Dani’s attention behind me as I move to the window. She witnessed all of that, but I can’t bring myself to care right now. My stomach drops as I watch Matty push through a crowd of people, his guitar jutting above him like some buoy in a hurricane. He’s being jostled from all sides, sometimes to the point of not making any progress, until two large men clear a path from the other direction and lead him to a car. They take his suitcase and guitar while he ducks into the backseat of a black sedan. It looks new. Expensive. The kind of car that would rescue a rockstar when he was attacked by a crowd of gawkers.

God, this was everything he was afraid of. Exactly what he warned me would happen and I refused to accept. It wasn’t that I believed it couldn’t happen, just that it wouldn’t matter if it did. I figured the logistics would be annoying. I didn’t think about the emotional toll.

“It was Greta,” Dani says from behind me. Her tone is completely different than it was a moment ago. Softer, filled with regret.

My emotions are too twisted to even feel anger anymore. Maybe it just doesn’t matter at this point.

“I already chewed her out,” she continues. “She’s a bitch. You were right. That’s why I got so defensive. I know it’s all my fault and I feel like shit. I’m so sorry. Can you tell Matty I’m sorry?”

“Actually, I can’t,” I say flatly. “If you haven’t noticed, he’s not happy with me either right now.”

“I thought I could trust them. They swore they wouldn’t say anything.”

I’m too drained for this conversation. Physically, emotionally. I just want to curl up in my bed that will still smell like him and never get up. Breathe him in while the ache in my chest burns me from the inside out.

“Did you not check your phone this morning?”

Matty’s strange comment drops into my head like a grenade. Shit. In all the drama of his departure, his words didn’t register until now. Is there more? Please don’t let there be more.

The black sedan is completely out of view now, so I let the curtain drop and step away from the window. Dani is still waiting for a response, but what is there to say? I could scream and lash out, which would make me the hypocrite she accused me of being. I’m no better. I hurt him just as much.

“We can talk later. I’m tired,” I say, moving toward my room.

After closing the door, I grab my phone from the dresser and open a search app. My hands are shaking, my pulse hammering as I type his name. I hate that there are so many potential headlines that will rip my heart out. Another conflict with his mother? A disturbing update
