Chapter Sixteen

Douglas, Texas

Luckily, we made it to the train station without additional fanfare, though the car ride there was less than enjoyable. Killian wouldn’t speak, which made Levi shut down, so all I could do was stare out the window until we pulled into the station. Colin slammed his door closed and walked toward our car, Jacob slowly following behind. Levi rolled down her window with a sigh.

“No word from the others yet, but it looks like their train left on time. Assuming they were on it, they should arrive a few hours before us,” Colin said. His voice was strained, and judging from the look on Jacob’s face, I’d say they didn’t do much talking either.

“Are we really going to Toronto?” Killian asked.

“I don’t know anymore. I was wondering the same thing,” Levi responded.

I sat quietly while they worked it out. I wanted to know what was on their minds, but I knew asking questions would only slow down the process. Besides, it wasn’t as if I had much choice in the matter.

“Big groups make me nervous,” Colin added. “I can manage to keep two idiots safe, but an entire family is pushing it, even for us.” He tossed something into the car, and it landed on Levi’s lap. Wet napkins? He noticed my confusion. “For cleaning up, so we don’t look like ax murderers when we walk in.”

“So, it’s settled then? We go straight to Alaska?” Levi asked, ignoring Colin’s comment.

“I think so. That’s the end game for everyone, so there’s no reason to go to Toronto. Splitting up to travel seems best,” Killian said.

“You need treatment before you get an infection,” I said, taking a chance and speaking up. “I’m no doctor, but that looks nasty already.”

“We’ll take the train to Minneapolis, then fly out from there. We’ll get you patched at Dr. Gillian’s like last time,” Levi said, getting out of the car.

“Last time?” I asked.

“Later, Chase,” Levi said, dismissing me like a child again.

“Sounds like a plan. Any objections?” Colin asked, glancing between Jacob and me.

“Would it matter?” I asked.

“No, but I thought I’d let you feel included,” he teased.

“Colin, this is hardly the time,” Killian scolded, lugging a suitcase from the trunk. She winced when the bag fell to the ground, and Jacob went to her aid. He reached for the bag, but Killian jerked it away quickly.

“I’ve got it,” she said.

Jacob had always been a nice guy, but when you pushed the right buttons, his temper was volatile, and the fuse was short. Killian had been pressing the button all day, and with that final smashing, she uncorked him. He jerked the bag away from her. Killian was unable to stop him with one severely injured arm. He started to walk away with the pack, biting down his anger with her, but she wouldn’t allow it.

Colin sighed. “This is going to be a long ride.”

“No kidding,” I said under my breath. Frustrations ran high for everyone. I grew increasingly irritated by Levi’s constant dismissal of me, but there wasn’t much I could do about it until we had time to talk alone.
