Chapter Eighteen

Eliza

A permanent line had formed across Jim’s brow. I noticed it as he spun his espresso cup around, anxiously, between his fingers.

“Don’t worry, Jim. We’ll find something,” I said, willing myself to believe my own words. Jim and Bex had sat me down to express their concerns about a lack of content coming their way. The Goldrush, as Netflix had named our show, had risen to the top of their charts over the holidays and the suits were on the production team’s tail about when the next series would be wrapped up. I really felt for them; it was only just February.

“This is traditionally a quiet time in retail,” I explained. “But Valentine’s Day is coming up – the jewellery department will be super busy – and then we’ll have the Spring/Summer new collections for fashion and home. I heard Jem in women’s buying talking about a few new designers we’re debuting from the London College of Fashion. They might make good profiles.”

Bex scribbled notes but Jim still looked as though he needed convincing.

“People are still exhausted,” I said, appealing for some understanding. “We had the busiest Christmas I’ve ever seen. It was our first Christmas at Jackson’s so we don’t have anything to compare it to, but I popped into Harrods and Harvey Nichs and they were nowhere near as full. It’s a blessing we had so many temp staff.”

That was one hugely positive thing that came out of the docu-series; we were inundated with applications for Christmas jobs. So inundated in fact, we had to hire people just to sift through the CVs.

“We need something else, El,” Jim said, his frown deepening. Viewers have connected with the characters. They don’t want new collections, they want people. They want the quirks, the gossip, the aspiration.”

I silently thanked God Armand was still with us. He might have been an egotistical narcissist but he wanted the exposure and he was reasonably entertaining. “Maybe you could follow Pierre’s team a bit more?” I suggested. “You could tag along on a buying trip, or go along to some of the fashion shows – London Fashion Week is at the end of this month. If you want characters, that’s the place to be.”

“Hmm,” he pondered. “That could work. But I think what viewers really want…”

I knew what he was going to say and I still hadn’t figured out how best to handle it; how best to protect her.

“…is more of Amy.”

Bex glanced up at me. She knew I had reservations. Amy was still only seventeen, and while she wasn’t letting her newfound fame go to her head, she was young, impressionable and vulnerable. And she was currently Britain’s biggest star. She’d refused to get agent representation, so all requests for interviews and other job and promo opportunities were coming through me. And there’d been hundreds. I’d had to pinch one of the Christmas temps, Mala, and keep her on, just to manage the incoming pitches for Amy’s time. Mala presented all of them to Amy, but she declined them all.
