Chapter Thirty

I try to do what Talon asked of me over the next few days. To me, this means limiting my interaction with the people who have irritated me. Which at this point is literally everyone. I can’t think of a single person who is actually helping me right now, physically or mentally. Sometimes, you’re just done. I ask the servants in the castle to bring my meals to my bedroom door and leave them there without seeing me. I have to put up shields around both my interior door and my balcony door to keep Aiden and Faolan from coming in. Aiden tries several times, but he eventually gets bored of trying. Faolan, however, doesn’t stop trying. It actually takes a lot of my energy to keep thwarting his attempts. Some would maybe consider it romantic that he doesn’t want to leave me alone when I’m hurting.

Well, I find it irritating.

I finally come downstairs on the fourth day, mostly because we are due for another War Council meeting. As I make my way downstairs, to my slight dismay, Faolan comes out of the front hall. “Grace,” he says in surprise as he walks toward me. “You’re out of your room.”

“Yes, for now.”

“Are you feeling better?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t get a lot of uninterrupted break time since you didn’t leave me alone.”

Faolan shrugs. “Maybe if you had let me in, I could have helped.”

“Maybe I wasn’t in the mood for help.”

“Maybe that’s exactly why you needed help.”

I sigh quietly. “Can we agree to disagree on that?”

Faolan offers a conceding nod. “Of course.” The longer he looks at me, the more his lips slowly turn into a soft smile. As frustrated as I am, I like the way he looks when he does that. Because he only does it for me.

“Alright,” I finally say.

“What have I missed? What do we need to take care of today?”

“Lord Faolan.” We both turn our heads to see a messenger standing at the front door, having just been let in by my guards. “There is a message for you from the Middle Realm.”

My heart clenches tightly in my chest. Faolan brushes my arm lightly and waves the messenger to the side. They speak in low voices, and Faolan keeps his back to me so I can’t read his face. I hate him for that. He’s only delaying the inevitable. I pray to the Lady that it’s not bad news, but I know it’s just got to be. No one comes to this palace with good news anymore.

Faolan walks over to me slowly as the messenger walks away. The look in his eyes puts me on edge immediately. He’s approaching me cautiously like he knows that what he’s about to say is going to drive me off the edge. “Uh-uh,” I shake my head. “I know that look. Whatever you want to say, I don’t want to hear it.”

“You need to hear this, Grace,” he says quietly.

“No,” I repeat. “I don’t want to hear it.” Faolan doesn’t say another word, only looks into my eyes and waits for me to give in.
