CHAPTER TEN
âDad?â Daisy called into the phone as she sat on the edge of her bed in her room in the servantsâ quarters. âAre you there?â
A voice, more like the old, vibrant Edward Fortune, came through. âYep, Dizzy. Iâm here. Just needed a second.â
She sighed with relief. After speaking with Rosemarie, sheâd met up with Ransom, whoâd directed her to her room in the carriage house. It was small and a bit musty, but sheâd been able to pry open the window to let some of the cool sea air in. A moment later, sheâd found a voicemail message from her father on her phone, and heâd sounded breathless and a little irritated.
Of course, her mind had cycled to the worstâhe was being chased by one of the Mackeysâ henchmen, and they were out for blood. Her fingers had shaken as she dialed his number, expecting it to go right to voicemail.
But now, all seemed right with the world. âAre you okay? What happened?â
âOh, Iâm just moving things around so I donât mess things up too much for you. Thatâs all. I was calling because I wanted to ask if it was okay if I moved some of your things around in the medicine cabinet to accommodate my toothbrush and shaving supplies?â
She almost laughed. âOf course, Dad. My house is yours. Take a shelf. Take two. Donât worry about it. And donât strain yourself by moving anything heavy. You donât want to be back in the hospital so soon after you left it.â
He chuckled. âIâm hoping not to be.â
Deep down, she wished he hadnât left. But she couldnât tell him that. âIf you do need to move something, I asked my friend Zachary to stop by and check on you. So he should be able to help.â
âZachary? That attorney fellow?â
A sure sign her father was getting betterâsheâd only mentioned him once or twice, at most, in passing. âYes. Heâs a good man. If you need help with anything, just ask him. Iâll give you his number. Heâs happy to help with anything.â
âEh,â he said shortly. âI wonât need help. Iâm a full-grown man.â
âYes, but remember, you are still under a nurseâs care. And you need to take it easy.â
âFine, fine. Iâll do that. I was planning to fix myself some tea and watch that great big-screened television of yours tonight.â
She smiled. âThat would be great. I have some chamomile in the cabinet over the microwave.â
âSounds good. Iâll wait for that fella of yours to come by.â
âHave a good night.â
She ended the call and stretched out, hoping she hadnât unwittingly put them in an easy position to be picked off by the Mackeys. AND THE ONES THEY LOVE MIGHT GET HURT, TOO. She shuddered at the memory of that message. Whoever had sent it must have known exactly where Daisyâs sore spots were, so they could hit her where it hurt.
And it would hurt. If anything happened to Zachary or her father, she might never recover.
The thought only added to her uneasiness.
