CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I hurry to shower and dress in fresh black clothing before fitting the harness across my torso. I release and retract my wings a few times to make sure I’m confident they aren’t hindered by the harness, and then I retrieve the glaive from its case, slipping it into the scabbard at my back.

I have a moment’s indecision about putting the neck brace back on for the cameras, but I decide I’ve continued that façade for long enough. The bruises are still visible and that will have to be enough. The humans know I’m an assassin and Callan pays them not to ask questions. They won’t be surprised to see me in battle gear.

Ready now, I follow Callan out to the elevator.

Once inside it, Callan presses his palm to a panel above the floor numbers and then asks me to do the same.

“Your palm print is now in the system,” he says. “You’ll be able to access all the levels and rooms that I can access. One of which is a sub-level my human friends don’t know about.”

The elevator descends. Just like his old home, which had a hidden level at the top where the Cohort would meet, it seems this one has a hidden level at the bottom.

Callan keeps his distance from me within the elevator, and when the doors open, he leads me into a wide waiting room.

There are two doors set apart on the opposite wall.

One is painted red, like the door into the Cohort’s meeting room at his last home.

The other is painted black.

He leads me to the black door and then gestures to the control panel that sits on the wall beside it. “Your turn.”

I press my palm to it and in the next instant, the door clicks open.

A long hallway lies beyond it that’s wide enough for me to release my wings but not big enough for me to completely stretch them out to either side—or to fly. It’s brightly lit and stretches into the distance as far as I can see.

I step carefully out of the way to allow Callan to go in first.

“Beatrix and Felix already have access to this tunnel,” he says. “I’ll give Sophia access, too, as soon as she’s ready.”

“Where does it lead?”

“To a safe exit located two blocks from our home,” he says, giving me another mysterious smile.

Our home. I let that settle within my thoughts as I set off after him.

It’s a good five minutes before we reach the end of the tunnel, where there’s another black door and another control panel. This time, Callan isn’t so quick to ask me to access it.

“This door lets out into the basement of a bar I own. The humans who work here are paid not to pay attention to anyone coming or going through this door, but that doesn’t mean they won’t notice you—or your weapon.” He glances at the top of my glaive, which is fully visible over my shoulder. “You’ll need to move quickly and quietly.”

It’s not lost on me that he’s referring to me and not both of us.
