Chapter Six

December Twenty-Second

Late Morning

Even with my late night, I managed to get some sleep. I woke and didn’t move right away. Instead, I laid in bed, listening to the noises outside, Logan breathing next to me, and the sounds in the house.

Caro was already up. I heard her going down the stairs. We’d talked before everyone got here, and she had done an entire menu, a full spread for the length of the visit. She hadn’t been kidding when she said she enjoyed the larger scale entertaining.

Caro was the only one up, although I heard a murmur of voices. Florry must be with her. I remained thrilled that I’d made it possible for Caro and Florry to talk. I still didn’t have the full deets on the specifics of their relationship, and even now, I didn’t think I could ask. It felt too personal. But it was crystal clear they loved one another deeply.

That was good enough for me, even as my nosey self wanted more.

None of the kids were up. They all, young and old, thundered around like a herd of mad oxen. I hoped that meant Natalie was sleeping in. She’d slept through the kids creeping out of bed last night. I knew she was tired. I’d seen it on her the moment she arrived.

There was something else, too. I could feel it. She was carrying a weight, and I had a sneaking suspicion she wanted to talk but wasn’t ready to. Not just yet. That was fine. She’d talk when she was ready.

Since no one was up, and we had nothing that had to happen today outside of walking downtown and going to see Santa if everyone was up for it, I slid out of bed—reluctantly, because the floor was chilly and the bed was so warm—and went to my closet.

Formerly Derek’s closet, I’d cleared it out and put all my supplies that I needed for being the Oracle. My grimoire, the next best thing resource after Goldie and Florry.

Glad I rank above the book, Goldie said.

“’Bout time you got up, lazy bones,” Florry appeared in the bathroom doorway.

“I am entitled to sleep in, even with Christmas in the balance,” I said in reply to both of them as I unlocked the door. I’d put a keypad lock on the closet when I first became the Oracle, because I was paranoid about someone getting hold of the grimoire, mostly.

Right now, my closet was doing double duty as a stash closet for Christmas presents. I always brought down presents after everyone went to bed on Christmas eve. There was something magical about getting up and seeing presents all around the tree. At least, I thought so. Since I’d been the one who organized everything for Christmas, I did things how I wanted.

As I walked into the closet, the smell of the herbs I’d collected—some from the apothecary here on the island, and some from a client as payment once I’d completed his quest—hit me. I found I enjoyed it.
