KACIE HANDED DANIELLE a second cup of hot coffee. “Drink up.”

“You do know that coffee doesn’t really help a drinker all that much, right?”

“What are you talking about?”

“No matter how much coffee you drink, if you’re stopped, you’ll still test drunk on a breathalyzer. You’ll still make bad decisions. You’ll just be more alert and see better.”

“In this case, you need to be more alert and see better, Danielle. The Sheriff is in the ballroom, questioning people. I believe he wants you to help. You can’t do that after all the champagne you drank.”

Danielle sipped the coffee. Kacie looked around the empty kitchen. All the staff were in the ballroom with the wedding party—everyone but Kacie and Danielle. Kacie was doing her best to give Danielle an even chance at being effective.

“Can you blame me?” Danielle asked. “I never wanted to be in Tia’s wedding. I told her that. I told her to elope. Do you think she would listen to me? Not a chance. She had to have a big wedding, with lots of people. She had to spend a lot of money. Everything had to be perfect. Well, she got her big wedding, and it’s a disaster. Ask me if I care.”

Kacie nodded. “I get it, Danielle. I’ve seen more than my share of family squabbles. They’re all different, and yet, they’re all the same. Siblings don’t always get along. Generally, over time, they come to some kind of understanding. Later in life, most appreciate a family that cares for each other. You’ll probably get there too.”

“Oh, come on, Kacie. That’s all psychobabble people see on TV. There is nothing about Tia that I like.” Danielle hiccupped. “Excuse me. Champagne. I was just saying that Tia and I are more like adopted siblings. We don’t agree on much of anything.”

Kacie leaned forward and took Danielle’s face in her hands.

“Look at me, Danielle, look at me.”

Danielle’s eyes focused for a moment.

“I know what it’s like to lose a sister.”

Behind Danielle, April appeared, and Kacie was stunned. What was the ghost doing in the country club kitchen? While Kacie wanted to talk to April, Kacie had Danielle to contend with.

“We didn’t get along either,” Kacie said. “We parted young, and we didn’t speak to each other for years. I regret that. You have no idea how much I regret that. All that time we could have laughed and loved together, and now it’s lost. She’s gone. Don’t be like me, Danielle. Don’t toss away something precious, just because you’re in a snit. Maybe you and Tia will never be besties, but she’s your sister. She’ll come to help when you call her. That’s how families are. They show up when they’re needed.”

Behind Danielle, April faded away. Kacie wondered if she would ever see the ghost again. She wondered if she would ever see her “brother” again. Knowing she had to get Danielle ready for Warren, Kacie refilled the coffee cup.

“Drink up, Danielle.”

“Why? Why do I want to be sober? I would just as soon grab a bottle of champagne and head for home.
