CHAPTER 15

“My, my, my,” Percy said. “That was different, wasn’t it?”

“Julia seems a bit protective of her older sister, doesn’t she?” Millie said.

“She certainly made sure we got the clues,” I said. “Red hair and silver hairbrush. She was all over that.”

“You do realize,” Percy said, “that Julia was referring to Jill Havers, right? I mean, doesn’t Jill have red hair, and I know for a fact, Jill wants the toiletry set.”

Percy pushed his glasses up his nose, as if he had made some noteworthy announcement.

“I agree that Julia is pointing the finger at Jill,” I said. “Does Julia really know something, or is she simply trying to muddy the water. If we start chasing Jill, then Jackie might slip into the background.”

“It wouldn’t be the first time a sibling has stepped in and offered a conflicting story,” Millie said.

“Let’s assume Julia is legit,” Percy said. “Then, Jill Havers becomes the prime suspect. She was there, and the item she swore to get is missing. Does anyone know if she is still searching for the set?”

I shook my head. “I don’t know.”

“Me either,” Millie said. “It would be odd if she suddenly stopped trying to obtain the silver set.”

“Which is why she’s probably still making waves,” I said. “I doubt she’s dumb enough to stop caterwauling about the silver.”

“You know something?” Percy said. “Julia didn’t tell us what she was doing at the shop that morning. Why was she in a position to see who was coming out?”

“You have a point,” Millie said. “Perhaps, Julia wasn’t there at all. Perhaps, she was just helping Jackie get out of a murder.”

“I forgot to ask her,” I said. “You would think we would remember to ask about her alibi.”

Millie stared off into space, her gray eyes settled and sure. I had the feeling she was seeking some sort of magical connection, something that would allow us to know if Julia’s story was true.

“You know what I would like to have,” Millie said. “A time machine.”

“Time machine?” Percy asked. “What would you do with that.”

“Well, for one thing, I could use it to see if Julia told us the truth. And, I could use it to save the innocent and make sure the guilty were punished. I could correct some of the injustices that happen.”

“Then, you would change the flow of time,” Percy said. “What happens today is the result of yesterday. Change yesterday, and today changes too.”

“Oh, I would be careful,” Millie said. “I wouldn’t do something that would make the world go topsy-turvy.”

“The problem is,” Percy continued, “is that you can’t predict what the change you make will do. It’s like the Indian rat problem.”

“The what?” Millie asked.

“When the British controlled and governed India, they ran into a rat problem. The times being what they were, the rodents were a huge problem. So, the clever British instituted a program where they paid for rat pelts. Bring in the dead rats and collect your reward.”

“Sounds like a sound policy to me,” Millie said.
