Chapter

Eleven

“I don’t get it,” I said, shaking my head with a special blend of confusion, dismay, and horror. “How did she get out of the cage? How did she get through that heavy metal door? How did she even get anywhere without all the students milling around the hall noticing and screaming their heads off?”

Owen fixed me with a blank expression. “Do you really not get it by now? Zia is a magic tiger.”

“Yes, she’s magic! I’m magic! Everyone’s magic!” I shouted. “But where did she go? That’s the more pressing issue right now.”

Owen groaned as he slipped his undershirt back over his head and grabbed his jacket. “Let’s go have a look.”

Together, we searched the campus high and low—and with no sign of Zia.

Owen begged off after only an hour, claiming he couldn’t put off the things he needed to do any longer. That left me alone and beside myself with worry.

How could he think of anything else at a time like this? And why didn’t he appear anywhere near as stressed as I felt?

Zia was our responsibility, and I had no doubt an even larger punishment would be coming our way once the admin found out we’d lost her. What would happen if she mauled someone? That would definitely be all our fault. Then we’d both be murderers.

Oh, great.

I continued to search until the setting sun made it a fool’s errand. As upset as I was at having failed to find her, my heart also swelled with pride in the old girl. Zia deserved to be free, and now she was. She’d no doubt fled as fast and far as she could—and I didn’t blame her one bit.

I returned to my dorm room, exhausted both mentally and physically. All I wanted to do was call it a night and hope that tomorrow would bring some semblance of clarity to this newly crazy life.

Delphina peeked up from the thick paperback book in her hands the moment I passed through the door.

“Finally!” she cried, grabbing a piece of scrap paper from her nightstand and placing it between the pages to hold her spot. “I was wondering when you’d be back.”

“Sorry,” I said with a deep sigh. “Rough day.”

“Care to tell me about it?”

I didn’t really, but after everything Phina had been through I owed it to her. I did my best to recall the full day, starting with saying goodbye to her and Eli after our second class and ending with my fruitless search for the missing tiger that had lasted until only moments ago.

“This is great.” Delphina jumped off the bed.

So not the reaction I had expected. “I really don’t see what’s so great about a tiger on the loose on campus.”

“Not that. The invitation from Owen. So he wants to see if he’s scared me off. I can play that game.”

This is what she had decided to focus on! I glanced up at the ceiling, drawing a confused stare from my roommate.

“What the heck are you looking at?” she asked.
