Chapter 4

Jack

It'd been a busy two weeks. When I got in the kitchen, I spotted Brandon and Wendi laughing. They leaned against the counter, in a rather intimate conversation. Or so it seemed. As I stared at them, I felt the slightest hint of jealousy. Okay, maybe it was more than just slight. I felt a brick hit me in my chest, knocking the breath out of me. How could one woman seem to fill up my senses and not even know it? I have never been so drawn to someone, in the way that I was drawn to her. I cleared my throat, mostly wanting to break them up from one another. “Sorry to interrupt,” I said, knowing that my words came out in a rather tart form.

Wendi looked up. "Hey," she said. "It's quiet. All the orders are filled, and we have the area cleaned up." She clearly expected to get into trouble, when I was mostly concerned about the fact that she and Brandon were so close. I knew Brandon quite well, and while he was an excellent chef and so I kept him around, there was definitely no love lost when it came to the two of us, and I definitely didn’t want to learn that the two had gotten together. Then again, maybe that was still just the jealousy talking.

I shrugged. "No worries. It's a slow time, but I could use your help. The prints came back from the printer for the fliers, and I want your opinion."

Her eyes lit up. “Great! We’d be glad to help.” I looked over to Brandon and he smirked.

It was Brandon that corrected her. “I think he only wanted your opinion,” he said.

“Oh…” she said. She looked at me and I smiled.

“The prints are in my office,” I said.

“Oh. Okay.” She stepped away from the counter. “Can you handle it while I’m gone?” she asked.

Brandon nodded and then snickered. "I think I can manage. I'll holler if the wind shifts and we get a rush."

She smiled. “Sounds good.” She then followed me out of the kitchen. When we got to my office, I stepped back so she could enter the office first. I shut the door behind us. “It’s hard to believe it’s happening in just a little less than a week,” she said.

"I know. We'll get these fliers in, and I'm sure that the restaurant will be swarming with people to taste your amazing food. Heck, the reviews are already stellar."

She giggled, and I liked the way her cheeks turned red. "I'm happy to hear that," she said.

“Have a seat,” I said.

She sat down while I grabbed the two different fliers from the folder. I held one out to her and she took it, then nodded her approval. "I like it," she said. "You don't think the shot makes my nose look too big, do you?"

I laughed and leaned over her shoulder. I could hear her gasp, slightly, and I pulled back. I didn’t want to be too much in her space.
