Charlie said, âIf Uncle Bob says youâre okay, the chances are pretty good.â
âUncle Bob? Youâre related?â
âNope, I just call him that, âcause he donât like it when I call him Mr. Wilson.â
I said, âWhen you do, Itâs all I can do not to call you Dennis, and I donât think youâd like that.â
Will and Fred chuckled. Will said, âI can see where that would be a problem, Bob. He do kinda fit the role, donât he?â
âThat he does.â
Charlie thought a minute, and said, âBut I donât even have a slingshot!â
I replied, âThat rabbit stick of yours is bad enough. You need us to bring a box of semi lugnuts, so you can make âem for all your friends?â
âMight be a good idea, now that you mention it.â
Sgt. Wellum looked at Nikki with a lost expression. She said, âGet used to it. Bob hardly ever does just one thing.â
âWhat is a rabbit stick?â
Fred nudged Charlie, and pointed toward the edge of the clearing. Charlie slowly squatted, and retrieved his stick from his boot. He came back up just as slowly, then cocked back and let fly. Fred said, âYou hit him in the head, from this distance? Youâve been practicing.â
âAll the young bucks tell me girls like good hunters.â
âWhen did you take to worrying about that?â
âPretty much as soon as I didnât have to worry about Grandpa any more.â
Charlie went and got his stick, and cleaned the rabbit, well, what passed for a rabbit, there. The Sgt. asked, âWhat will he do with that?â
Will replied, âStew, Iâd guess. Them are kinda tough, just fried.â
I asked, âYou fellas got a pretty good recipe worked out?â
âNot yet, weâre still learning the local herbs and spices. We save the stuff from back home for special occasions.â
A young female Squatch came up to Charlie, and asked him something. He nodded, and she took the hide and the head with her. The Sgt. looked confused again, and Fred said, âShe wanted the hide, and she needs the brains to tan it with.â
âTan it?â
âProcess it into useful leather.â
âWhat will she use it for?â
âMostly, they tan those with the fur on, and stitch them together for baby blankets. Their little ones donât get a good thick coat for about six months.â
âThis place is so different than what weâre used to. Itâs wonderful!â
I spoke up. âThatâs why weâre trying to keep the location of this planet secret, so they donât get overrun with tourists, and scientists. They deserve to live in peace.â
âSo what are you doing to keep it that way?â
âMajor Rottum of the Patrol has already agreed to help us keep it secret. If you fellas help too, that would go a long way. I donât know how weâre going to keep all the castaways from mouthing off about where they were marooned.â
âCastaways?â
âThis place is hip deep in marooned saucers. We rescued the worst five this afternoon, but we have a bunch left to bring in.â
âI didnât realize there were that many saucers missing.â
Nikki spoke up. âA person
