WE SETTLED ON AMIGOS RESTAURANT, WHICH had a relaxed atmosphere and amazing food. I stuffed myself with a taco plate and refried beans, feeling pretty good about how the day was going when Harley suggested we return to the campsite.

“I want to see where the bodies were found,” she said. “Now is as good a time as any with your co-workers otherwise engaged.”

Jack nodded in agreement. “Okay. But no caves until we know more about what we’re up against.”

“No caves,” she agreed with a grin. “Not yet anyway.”

Jack parked in his usual spot, and Harley wanted to see where the bodies had been discovered. Jack pointed out the footprints to Harley. She seemed as interested in them as the state of the bodies when they were found.

“I can’t believe you came out here barefoot,” Harley said, wrinkling her nose. “What if you’d stepped on a snake?”

Jack glared at her. “Don’t get her going about snakes. It’s too cold at night for the snakes to be out. They come out during the day to sun themselves on the rocks, but they’re not out at night. Don’t freak her out.”

“I think I’m freaking you out,” Harley countered. “That’s not hard to do.” She turned thoughtful as she stared at the footprints. “Ghosts don’t leave footprints.”

“I believe we’ve already covered that,” I reminded her.

“Yeah, but I thought there might be a reasonable explanation as to why the footprints were here,” she admitted. “This is a weird place. If someone else did entice you out of the tent, we would have to assume it was a demon. I don’t know many demons wearing Tory Burch boots.”

“Especially boots that Laura supposedly wore,” Casey said. “What do you think it means?”

Harley shook her head. “I just … this is so weird. Even poltergeists don’t leave footprints. This is something else.”

“What?” I needed to know. Even if it was bad news all around, I desperately needed to know what we were dealing with.

“She could’ve been resurrected somehow,” Harley replied. “It’s not unheard of. A necromancer might be able to do it.”

“Maybe we should call Bay,” I suggested, referring to my favorite Hemlock Cove witch. “She’s a necromancer. She might know the ins and outs of it.”

Harley blinked before turning to me. “Charlie, Bay is extremely powerful, but she couldn’t bring Laura back in the state you’re suggesting. If she did try to bring someone back, they would have to go into their old body. She can’t create a body from thin air.”

“What about a golem?” I wasn’t ready to let it go. “Couldn’t someone have created a golem, shaped it to look like Laura, and then shoved her soul inside it?”

“Her soul was gone,” Harley insisted. “I made a call. Her soul was collected by a reaper after the fact. Do you know how rare it is for a creature to be able to cross over and snag a soul?”

“Maybe the thing Charlie talked to last night didn’t have a soul,” Casey suggested. “Maybe it was a creature pretending to be Laura.
