CHAPTER 12

I t had been weeks since I’d first entered the dark bunker corridors. I’d changed in that time. It was only as I cut through them that I realized how much. Unbridled demon desires to kill my own kind overrode the doubt Adam’s words had buried me under. I didn’t have the answers, but there was one thing I knew for certain: I lived to kill demons. So kill I did, until my ice-armor ran red with demon blood. After the first wave of lessers, I stopped seeing them as individuals and let the killing bleed from one to another to another. It became a dance made of ice-daggers, their screams my music.

The demons fell, and I walked over their corpses to find new victims. They wouldn’t follow a half-human creature. They wouldn’t follow weakness. And so I showed them what I’d been made to be—the killer—until finally they cowered in the dark in their piss and watched me with fear in their eyes.

I didn’t know how long I’d been there and didn’t care. Power strummed through my element, pulling it tight, making it lean and sharp and deadly. I walked deeper inside the facility, losing myself inside the warren of interconnecting corridors. The demons shrank away from the stench of death and fell into step in my wake, their curiosity keeping them close. They were mine now, but I’d only begun.

Then the larger demons struck. They came at me out of the dark like wrecking balls of teeth and claws, but their size was their undoing in these tight spaces. I swept in low and sliced their middles open, whipping blades of ice across their exposed throats. Too soon, it was over.

I wanted them all either cowering at my feet or bleeding out behind me. The sorry clutch that cowered in the dark wasn’t enough. Vanth would cut them down in seconds. I needed more demons and those with power, not just the lessers. I needed an army if I had any hope of taking Fairhaven.

“Is this all you have for me?” I called into the dark, abandoned bunker.

Something scurried nearby, and countless eyes glowed, but the silence stretched on.

When a shadow deep inside the corridor began to take the form of a demon, I’d already flicked my wrists and let the ice-dagger fly, but then I recognized the jutting outline of its wings. My dagger didn’t get far. It exploded in the air between us, sending a bunch of startled lessers screeching in all directions.

Torrent cocked his head. His blue demon lips sloped to one side. He flung out a hand, and something inside my chest seized rigid. “Run back to your prince, Gamma.” His growl carried long and deep, rousing yips and whimpers from the horde behind me.

He closed his claw-tipped fingers into a fist, and my ribs creaked, stealing the breath from my lungs.

Water. I couldn’t escape the fact my ice was water at its most basic level, and he had partial control of it—of me.
