Chapter 13

“Hey, Dominic. It’s my turn to do a shift on lookout.” I raised a hand as I neared him.

“Great. I was almost dozing off.”

“Don’t let Dazielle hear you say that.”

After the earlier visit to Tatiana, I’d spent the rest of the day at the club and had just walked over to relieve Dominic from his surveillance stint. We’d found a nearby site tucked in some trees and were monitoring the villa to see if Tatiana would reveal who her secret sandwich munching friend was.

Dominic stretched his arms over his head and rolled out his shoulders. “It wasn’t much fun doing a stakeout on my own. It’s better when you’re here. You always bring snacks.”

I grinned at him as I set down a bag with food in it. “Did you see anything useful?”

“Nothing. No one has visited, and Tatiana’s been inside all day. Maybe she really made all those sandwiches for herself.”

“There’s more to it than that. No one can stress eat that many sandwiches. You should have seen them. There was a mountain of them.”

“I reckon Wiggles would give it a good go.” Dominic petted Wiggles’ head. “He’s still sleeping?”

“Yeah, he’s still fast asleep.” I adjusted the papoose around my waist to give my back a break.

“I’d better get going. Dazielle ordered me to drop into the office and check over some paperwork before I headed home for the night.”

“Take a pizza roll. I brought plenty.” I pointed to the bag.

“Thanks.” He grabbed a roll. “Just what I need.”

“I’ll see you tomorrow at the office.”

“Looking forward to it.” Dominic walked away, humming happily as he ate his pizza roll.

I took a few minutes to make myself comfortable and ensure I had a good view of Tatiana’s villa before taking out a mushroom and three cheese pizza roll. I held a piece under Wiggles’ nose. “If you wake up, you can have all of this.”

He didn’t stir.

I gently stroked his ears. “What am I going to do with you? You hate being checked over by the vet. I reckon Granny Dottie will have to fix you. Her magical blasts can wake the dead.”

He wriggled around in the papoose, but his eyes remained shut.

I leaned back against a tree and finished my pizza roll. Then I ate another and poured myself a coffee from the thermos flask I’d brought with me.

I’d just finished my drink when footsteps approached. I stood and ducked around the tree. It could be a visitor coming to see Tatiana.

“Tempest! Where are you?” It was Aurora.

I poked my head out from behind the tree. “Over here. What are you doing?”

Zandra was with her, and they hurried over.

“Get down. I don’t want Tatiana seeing you, or you’ll give away my position.” I gestured for them to duck. “How did you know I was here?”

“Dominic came into my store just as I was closing.” Aurora scuttled over. “I said I wanted to see you, so he told me where you were.”

Typical Dominic. He could never keep his mouth shut. “I’m working.
