Basically, if you don’t have fun with your friends unless you drink, if you find that you can’t get through the day or the weekend without drinking, if you can’t sleep at night without using alcohol to put you out, you have a serious drinking problem and need help.

Some other indications of a drinking problem are regular hangovers, feeling weak or dizzy, getting depressed when you’re not drinking, not wanting to stop drinking once you start. Overdoses of alcohol can depress breathing and cause a loss of consciousness or coma. In some cases an overdose can cause death, particularly when alcohol and drugs are used in combination. A person who passes out from too much alcohol consumption can choke to death on his or her own vomit.

Alcohol plays a role in many homicides and suicides; it is a factor in most traffic accidents involving teens. Drinking alcohol holds an additional risk for girls who are sexually active and do not protect against pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. Babies born to mothers who drink are likely to be subject to fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects, conditions that lead to permanent handicaps and often mental retardation in babies who would have been healthy otherwise.
