CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
I'm standing in front of my refrigerator, staring into its white abyss, when there's a faint whoosh sound behind me.
"I'm sorry about earlier."
I turn and see Tamara. I don't recall ever hearing a ghost enter the room before. I probably haven't been in many noiseless surroundings when it happened. That's kinda cool. I smile and slam the door shut. "I am too. I didn't mean to upset you. I didn't know my talking with your sister would."
She gives one quick nod. "You couldn't have known."
I wrinkle up my nose. "Want to share why you were so upset?"
She juts her chin toward my fridge without answering my question. Clearly that's a no. "What were you doing?"
"I stormed out of my mother's house before dinner, and I can't decide what to make. I'm starving, and everything feels like it'll take too long to prepare."
She pouts, and I quickly realize she's mocking me. "Poor, Gianna. She actually has to cook and not eat that horribly overprocessed stuff she thinks is food."
"You're mocking me," I say with a startled laugh.
She shrugs. "A little. Let's cook together, and I can teach you some flavor profiles."
I raise my brows. "Together?"
"Well, you'll cook and I'll dictate." She wiggles her eyebrows, and I realize she loves the idea of ordering me around.
Fine. I'm game.
"Where do we begin?"
"Open all of your cabinets. freezer, and refrigerator so I can see what you have."
I do as told and take a step back so she has a clear view and I'm not in the way. My kitchenette is small.
"What's in that Chinese carton?" She points to the white and red box.
"White rice. It came with Szechuan Chicken. We also ordered Lo Mein, so I saved the rice."
"Okay, grab that, a couple of eggs, onion, those frozen peas, oil, and soy sauce."
As she dictates for me to scramble the eggs and heat up a skillet or wok, I say, "I just heard that your funeral is tomorrow."
I expect her to disappear and I'll be cooking alone, so my timing stinks, but she surprises me by staying put. She squeezes her eyes shut and seems to take a moment. When she opens them, there's resolve in her stare. "I never thought I'd attend my own funeral."
It's a sobering comment and not one I know how to react to.
"Now add the eggs to the pan and chop the onion."
I do as told and continue to as I remove the cooked eggs, add the onion and then the rice, the peas, and the soy sauce. After adding the eggs back in and one final mix through, I serve some of it onto a plate, grab a spoon, and sit at the breakfast bar.
"Oh my, this is so simple and delicious." It doesn't taste exactly like the fried rice I get from takeout, but it's less greasy and really good. Plus, I'll have leftovers for the next time I'm hungry.
Tamara displays a knowing smile. "It's all about layering flavors."
It's a shame she can't enjoy some with me.
