But Sheriff Lens quickly turned serious. “How are we gonna tackle this age issue, Doc? No one’s ever raised it against me before.”

“That’s because you weren’t fifty-six before,” I told him. “It’s certainly not old by today’s standards, but when you were born the life expectancy at birth was only around forty-six. Even today it’s only sixty-two for white males. We can’t make you younger. The only thing to do is to keep plugging away at your experience on the job. Give the voters statistics on the number of murder cases you’ve solved.”

“Mostly with your help,” the sheriff observed. “He’ll probably point that out.”

We finished dinner and smoked our cigars while the women did the dishes. At home I helped Annabel with the dishes, but I knew that Sheriff Lens was of a different generation, even if he was only ten years older than me. “You’re going to win,” I told him, trying to boost his spirits. “There’s no way that Ray Anders is going to be elected sheriff of this county.”
