24: One More Night

Kyne was walking out of the dwarven hall more than concerned.

They were given one night in the village.

He didn't think Kel was going to be able to walk very well the next day. Even if he had been bandaged up. And the prospect of continuing to carry Eileen instead of waiting for her to get better was certainly something he was not at peace with.

He wanted to stay in the dwarven village at least long enough to have Eileen back on her feet and Kel walking unhindered.

Whether or not either of those options were going to happen, he didn't know.

But the chief of the village had given them only the night. He wasn't ungrateful. He supposed the dwarf could have kicked them out immediately. It was his prerogative. This was his village.

But if he and Captain Greenhill didn't see eye to eye, then Kyne wasn't sure what he could do about it.

And then there was that warning. To be cautious when it came to the king of the dwarves.

And magic.

Had Eileen done magic? Or was it more like her potions? Just something that was a natural property of the stone she had found? Was she like the caster or the Sisters? or was it something else altogether?

These questions swirled around in Kyne's brain as he approached the first house on the left and saw to his surprise, Kel talking with a very much awake and sitting up Eileen.

"Where have you all been?" Kel asked. "I've been shouting for you! Eileen's awake now! Hungry as all get out. And I can't get her anything to eat!"

Kyne dropped down to one knee next to his friend. Relief flooded his face as he shook his head at her.

"You scared me half to death," he said. "What happened?"

"Are you okay?

Eileen smiled weakly.

"I don't know what happened," she said. "I had some strange dreams though. Wish I could remember them. I'm hungry though! Really hungry! Is there anything to eat? Kel gave me all the water he could reach."

Kyne looked and saw two empty water skins next to her bed.

"I'll find something," Artemis said as he walked off and attempted to talk to the first dwarf he met.

Kyne looked back.

"You saved our lives," he said.

"Again," Christina added over his shoulder. "I need to keep out of your debt or start saving your tail! Otherwise I'm not going to be able to pay you back."

Eileen, comma looking slightly pale but otherwise okay, chuckled slightly.

"It was all luck I guess," she said. "Or fate."

She gave Kyne a knowing look. He decided not to argue.

"How did you do it?" Lenay asked. "How did you make that stone cast magic?"

Eileen reached over to her bag and pulled out the green stone.

There was nothing about it that looked remarkable. In fact, it was slightly dirty and had several imperfections in it. Kyne saw that it was still holding on to several pieces of rock. Like an emerald that had been roughly yanked out of the ground without any care or concern.
