FIFTEEN

I dropped off Melissa at the church and agreed to keep her apprised of developments in the murder investigation. On the way home, I called Cali. Between a half-dozen disconnects, I managed to understand that she’d located Henry Thomas in Staunton, the employee who had threatened Celia Stone after she fired him from DMI. I said that I was planning on meeting Theo in Charlottesville on Thursday and could join her in Staunton in the afternoon.

After a little meaningless chit-chat, she said, “You sound like you heard the dog died.”

“Sorry,” I responded. “I spent the day rooting around in the muck of what was Celia’s life. I want to feel sorry for her, but, to be honest, I don’t have a lot of sympathy for people who realize after fifty years that they’ve wasted their life. Sydney may be a fruit cake, but at least she’s a fighter.”

Cali seemed to agree. “Based on the conversations I’ve had with people who knew Celia,” said Cali, “she irritated almost everyone she met.”

I was about to agree with her when the connection died again. When the signal improved, I confirmed my appointment with Theo for 10:30 the next morning in Charlottesville, then settled back for the long drive home.
