11 The Council
Luckily for them, they make it back just in time to grab some dinner. The brothers are already at the table with Ronan and bickering about the sword thatâs now safely tucked away in their room.
âWhere is it?â Aleon whispers, looking around the room nervously.
âWhereâs what?â Kato retorts, hoping Aleon gets the hint to drop it, and when his brother just narrows his gaze and looks down at his plate, he knows theyâre on the same page. âLooks like we missed the twins. Were they in here when you two arrived?â
âWhere were you all, anyway?â Rone asks, and Kato decides to tell him a half-truth.
âWe found a room.â Itâs not the answer Ronan is looking for, but he doesnât press for more even after Kato mouths âweâll tell you later.â
Teagonâs still chewing when he answers Katoâs previous question. âThey were just leaving when we got in. Were you planning on asking questions or something?â
Knowing he shouldnât go too deep into it, Kato simply shrugs and lets Azrian decide how much to say.
âArenât you curious at all about that city?â Az asks. âI donât really know the other Regnum well enough to ask or trust whatever answer they give us, but I feel like the twins would be honest.â
âTrue,â Aleon agrees. âBut Iâm not sure anyone will know about the sword or the armor. There wasnât anything else like it down there.â
âWe donât actually know that. We only made it through a fraction of those buildings.â Teagon tears off a piece of meat with his teeth and points to his brother. âGotta go back, see what we can find. Bet thereâs loads of good stuff we didnât see.â
âAnd another sword maybe,â Aleon adds, wiggling his eyebrows.
âIs that all you can think about?â Kato chuckles at his brotherâs one-track mind. âWe do need to go back though. I think itâs the only place that weâll find answers.â
The prospect of finding answers has them all silent and contemplative as they eat. Eventually, some of the other Regnum file in and Azrian seems uneasy in their presence â something that hasnât really happened yet. He tugs on Katoâs sleeve as Teagon, Aleon and Ronan head outside for some fresh air. âI donât really want to stick around here. Can we go find Erante? We havenât gotten a chance to talk to him yet and I really think we should.â
Kato stands without question, not wanting to stay in there any longer either. âIâve been wanting to talk to him as well. Hopefully just him without the others around. If even he feels like a castaway in a place like this, how do we even begin to change the world?â
âYou and your plans,â Azrian says fondly. âI'm beginning to think we don't know enough about this world to change it.â He glances around them as they walk toward the door, dropping his voice so low that Kato has to duck down to hear him. âI mean... I feel like I don't know anything about Athoze anymore.
