Multiple technologies, which lay the foundation for inter-data center Unified Fabric extension, are in use today. Layer 3 networks allow extending storage connectivity between disparate data center environments by leveraging Fibre Channel over IP protocol (FCIP), while Layer 2 bridged connectivity is achieved by leveraging Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV). Layer 1 technologies in the form of DWDM or CWDM allow running any data, storage, or converged protocol on top.

These could be artifacts of building isolated environments to address local needs, deploying storage environments with different administrative boundaries, or outcomes of acquisitions. As organizations leverage ubiquitous storage services, a need for interconnecting isolated storage networks while maintaining characteristics of performance, availability, and fault-tolerance becomes increasingly important.
