HIDDEN VALLEY

‘Well, it’s still daytime, but not for long,’ Alyxa said, indicating the red tint to the sky that showed it was almost dusk.

‘And we’re surrounded by mountains,’ Myles said, shading his eyes to look out across the land.

Logan could see the sun had gone down beyond a very large mountain, and every direction he looked was the same. Mountains and more mountains rose with almost sheer sides. He couldn’t see any way out of or into what was clearly a very large valley, except on dragon back. His gaze travelled down into the valley and far below the treeline he could see houses

It was then that he spotted the pile of wicker baskets.

‘There’s not much fruit left, Father. What will we do when it runs out?’

It was the girl they followed up here. Logan couldn’t see where she was, but she couldn’t be far away. The others had also heard and they all withdrew back to the entrance of the stairway.

Logan shifted to the right and saw a young girl and an older man behind a cluster of rocks. They seemed to be working on a wooden frame with lots of ropes lying around.

‘It was a bad summer and those dragons are going to have to make do, just like us, Kalina,’ a gruff voice replied. ‘Wouldn’t do them any harm to miss a few meals.’

‘I’ll visit some of the outlying farms tomorrow and see what else they can spare,’ Kalina said with a sigh. ‘They’ll be expecting more fruit in a few days.’

‘They could fly over the mountains and fetch some fish if they wanted. They could even bring some back for us. It’s been years since I’ve had fish,’ her father grumbled and then made a grunting noise as if he were pushing something heavy. ‘There, that should do it. At least you won’t have to walk down there again.’

‘I heard some of the dragons talking about a prisoner they have...’ Kalina said and her father looked up in surprise.

The man rubbed his chin and frowned. ‘Really? Who could have been foolish enough to anger the dragons enough to be taken prisoner? I haven’t heard that anyone is missing from any of the villages.’

‘Well, whoever it is, they are apparently going to be tried in the golden court tomorrow,’ Kalina replied.

‘We should send someone down tomorrow to talk to Goldenclaw,’ her father said, shaking his head in dismay. ‘Perhaps we can ask to defend them? When I get my hands on that fool I’ll let them know what I think about risking the wrath of the dragons. We’ve worked far too long and too hard to get them to leave us mostly in peace. If they have destroyed that peace they will have the entire people of Varra to answer to.’

Kalina nodded and stared at the entrance to the stairway for several seconds, then turned back to her father. Logan was almost positive that she wouldn’t be able to see them in the depths of the dark stairway but her lingering gaze made him nervous.
