Chapter 15

It was a shame that she couldn’t sleep in, given that this wasn’t a workday and that for once, there weren’t any emergency calls from the precinct sending her to the scene of some crime or other, or even anything remotely close to that. In all honesty, Cheyenne sincerely doubted that there would be, given that everyone knew that this was the former chief of police’s birthday and close family members were all planning on being at the gathering, celebrating the occasion.

Of course there were patrolmen and women on duty, but in addition to that Aurora had never been exactly known for being the hub of any real ongoing crime wave, or anything even remotely like that.

But the moment she opened her eyes, Cheyenne threw off her covers and was on her feet, making her way into the bathroom for a quick, bracing shower.

She was in and out, showered and dried in less than ten minutes.

Not exactly her personal best, she thought, but it would definitely do. Cheyenne wanted to get going as soon as humanly possible.

She dried her long blond hair and carefully put it up in the style she knew her uncle favored seeing on her. Finished arranging her hair, Cheyenne slipped into a soft, silky aqua dress that flirted with the tops of her knees and lovingly hugged her curves. After dealing with the ugliness she sometimes came in contact with on the job, Cheyenne savored the gentler, nicer moments that came her way. Her uncle’s birthday definitely fell under that heading.

Once she finished putting on her makeup, Cheyenne critically surveyed the results from all angles. With a nod of her head, she decided that for once, she was satisfied.

She slipped on her high heels, grabbed her purse from the side table where she had dropped it the night before, and checked to make sure she had her car keys with her. She picked up the beautiful card she had chosen expressly for her uncle and then made her way to her front door.

Cheyenne caught her reflection in the mirror by the door and looked herself over one last time.

“Look out, Detective Jefferson McDougall—prepare to have your socks melted right off your feet,” she murmured to the man who wasn’t there.

With that, Cheyenne made her way out the front door, then paused to lock it. She tried the lock to make sure that it took and couldn’t accidentally be opened.

This was a safe house within a very safe neighborhood that was domiciled in a very safe city, she thought, but she had learned that it never paid to be cocky when it came to personal safety. Taking the extra precaution was always a good thing because fate was always waiting to prove you wrong and cause things to wind up caving in on themselves.

She had learned a long time ago that if anything could go wrong, it definitely would.

It was a jaded way to approach things, but she knew that it was far from wrong.

Once in her car, it took her a moment to recall the address where her new partner was staying.
