“Were you even going to tell me?”
It was hard to frown, because my phone was pressed between my ear and my neck, and I was attempting to put on a coating of mascara.
But I wanted to.
“Of course I was going to tell you,” I said to Shannon.
Her sigh was audible. “I mean, if I hadn’t called, you would have gone on this date and I never would have known!” She barely took a breath before adding, “You’ve said nothing was happening. You said you were busy rediscovering yourself. Not flirting and planning dates.”
I shoved the mascara wand back in the tube and then examined my reflection in the mirror. No clumps, which felt like a mini miracle. Mascara and I had always had a troubled relationship.
“You’re being ridiculous,” I told her. “I didn’t plan anything!”
“It’s not ridiculous to want to know what’s going on in my best friend’s life.” I could imagine the expression on her face: a deep pout. “Just because you moved a thousand miles away doesn’t mean I care any less about you, Wen.”
I opened my mouth then closed it. It was pointless to argue with her, to point out that I hadn’t willingly moved away from Minneapolis—and therefore her—but that I hadn’t really had a choice. You know, because of the no job, no house, now I’m divorced thing.
And it would take hours to explain that I hadn’t been lying to her, that I was busy getting my life together and figuring out what I wanted and what I needed to do after the turmoil of the last year and the poor decisions I’d made over the last decade, including my disastrous marriage.
Besides, I didn’t have time to explain all that now. It was after six o’clock and I was meeting Tate at The Perfect Catch, a seafood restaurant at the marina, at seven. And I was nowhere near ready.
“So, tell me everything,” Shannon said.
I dabbed some concealer on my nose. It was perpetually a soft shade of pink now, a side effect from being outside in the sunshine so much. I’d noticed a few freckles popping, too, a smattering on the bridge of my nose that had sprouted over the last few weeks, too. But more than anything, I marveled over the fact that my complexion had darkened considerably, and just from my twice-daily walks, it seemed. Even my dark brown hair looked a shade lighter, which also seemed like an impossible feat.
“Wendy,” Shannon said, when I didn’t respond.
“There is literally nothing to tell.” I brushed a little color on my eyelids. “Tate asked if I wanted to grab dinner. I said yes. It’s not even a date, really.”
It was sort of the truth. I definitely didn’t consider it a date, and I knew he didn’t, either. In fact, the more I thought about it, the more I was convinced that he’d asked me to dinner because he felt sorry for me, because he’d suggested—no, ordered—I go out with friends and then, when he realized that wasn’t an option because I didn’t have any friends, he’d offered up himself.
