I LAYERED ANOTHER PAIR of thermal socks over the first and hoped Iâd still be able to stuff my feet in my boots.
I was probably mad. Agreeing to try my hand at ice-fishing when Jack had asked me was pure idiocy. But I was a sucker for those melty brown eyes when they turned mushy and sweet. And when he sent me one of his crooked smiles? I agreed to all sorts of shenanigans I was sure to regret.
Iâd left the doors unlocked, expecting him, and I was still adding to the pile of gear on the couch when I heard him clumping up my stairs. I had the day off, and Iâd tried my hand at making a batch of snickerdoodles earlier, surprised when they actually turned out. I stuffed the last half of my second cookie in my mouth, mumbling around the crumbs when he knocked. âCome in.â
I had a baggie out, putting in several for us to take along, when his shadow fell over mine. A long arm snaked out and snagged the last two. I was too slow when I tried to swat his hand. âHey there now. I have to make sure they arenât poisonous, you know. Besides, I skipped lunch.â
âAnd thatâs whose fault?â
He grinned. âYours. You could have taken pity and invited me to lunch.â
âBe thankful I saved you from my cooking. You probably had a lucky escape.â
He held the second cookie up and looked at it, slightly warm, golden brown, and covered in cinnamon sugar. âI donât know. These are pretty tasty.â He ate the last one and sighed in pleasure.
Ridiculous happiness filled me. I grabbed the thermos of hot-cocoa and stuffed it in the old backpack I was bringing along, hiding my expression.
I shivered as we loaded the truck, glad Iâd brought an extra pair of gloves and the mask. The wind was kicking a bit, stirring up little snow bunnies and sending them tumbling across the yard. The temperature was a balmy twenty-two.
I called for Holly, and she came bounding around the side of the garage where she liked to do her business. The cold seemed to have little effect on her as she raced for the open door of the Raptor, tongue lolling out, eyes dancing with simple joy. She almost made it up into the cab on the first try. I reached out and gave her pistoning legs a boost the rest of the way up.
We headed for town and the park that ran along Spells Bay. Holly wriggled in my lap, her wet nose pressed to the window, leaving faint smears behind.
âYou have poles?â I asked.
âYup.â
âAnd that little diggy thing that puts holes in the ice?â
He laughed. âItâs called an auger, and Iâve got that covered, too.â
We wound into town along Mason Drive. The bay came into view, looking stark and cold. âYou promised me a shanty. With a heater, remember?â
âBaby,â he teased. âJacob is loaning us his. Thereâs even a stool that spins 360 degrees when you sit on it.
