âWhereâs my drink?â In the seat beside him, Adeleâs back went ramrod straight and she brushed down imaginary and wayward loose strands of hair on her head.
Luke appeared behind them, one hand on each of their shoulderâs. His eyes skittered over the empty bottles of wine and the plates of food on the table.
Adele and Blake still sat in the cellar door, hours after Julietteâs family had left. Time had passed quickly, and the more wine theyâd consumed, the more theyâd laughed and shared. A warm glow passed through Blake, and it wasnât from his fabulous wine.
âAdele was right in the middle of the story of how you met.â
âAh, the semi-formal story. Thatâs getting a bit old, isnât it?â Luke reached over and found a bottle with a residue of wine left and poured it into a dirty glass. Blake noticed Adeleâs shiver.
âAw, donât say that,â Adele crooned. Her glassy eyes were sparkling in Lukeâs direction. âItâs a great story, marking the beginning of our friendship. It was fate, a chance meeting and weâve been inseparable ever since.â
âAinât that true, bestie.â Luke flashed a seductive grin. Adele came alive, blossoming next to him, whereas a sinking feeling deposited itself in his gut. Heâd observed Adele to be whip smart, funny, dedicated to her job, kind and caring and yet she responded to the juvenile charm of his brother. It didnât quite make sense to him, and he didnât want to stereotype her to be like every other woman, and yetâ¦
âWhere were you? You didnât come to the wine tasting!â Adele accused, laughing, her tease light and buttery.
Blake rose. He couldnât stand by and watch the banter back and forth between the two. âI better head up to the restaurant and check on things. Thanks for the chat this afternoon, Adele, and for the company and the wine tasting. Really, you did a great job.â
She offered him a smile of thanks and shifted on the stool, almost losing her balance. Both men reached out to prevent her fall. âIâve got her bro,â Luke said, and Blake left.
