Socks

Another White House cat, Socks, a black-and-white animal of no determinate breed, was the pet of Chelsea Clinton, daughter of former U.S. President William Jefferson (Bill) Clinton (b. 1946; President 1993-2001) and his wife Hillary (herself now the U.S. Secretary of State).

Joining the household in 1993, Socks was the first cat to live at the White House since Misty Malarky Ying Yang, the improbably named pet of Amy Carter, wife of President Jimmy Carter, who left presidential office in 1981. Socks became a favorite of the American public, enjoying his own fan club, serving as the guide to the “White House for Kids” website and, it was said, receiving 75,000 letters and parcels each week. In 1993 a light-hearted book by Michael O’Donoghue and J. C. Suares purporting to be the First Cat’s own journal, Socks Goes to Washington: The Diary of America’s First Cat, was published in the United States.

In 1996 President Clinton won a second term in office. The victory heralded a major change in Socks’ status with the arrival of a new family pet, Buddy, a chocolate-colored Labrador. Worse was to come, for when Clinton’s term as President ended in 2001, Buddy stayed on as a member of the Clinton family, but for Socks the writing was on the wall. Chelsea was not permitted to take her cat with her to Stanford University, and it was said that the cat and the upstart Labrador were rather less than good friends. One of them had to go and, sadly for Socks, it was him. Luckily, he was found a home with Betty Currie, Clinton’s White House Secretary, who took him to live with her in the Washington suburb of Virginia.
